Chess Club
The Permian Basin Home School Chess Club will be held every Thursday, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the upstairs meeting room at the Midland County Library.
The Chess Club is a non-profit organization and official affiliate of the United States Chess Federation. Our primary goal is to introduce homeshcoolers to the game of chess. We challenge our players to play their best and to attain greater skill as they continue to play.
We demand good sportsmanship and fair play, and expect courtesy from all our players. We present chess puzzles and situations that hone skill and increase a player's ability to react quickly to their opponent's attacks.
For those who do not know how to play, we teach them the names of the pieces and how they move. For younger students and beginners, we go over the basics of the game, covering the beginning game and opening combinations.
For the more advanced player, we instruct them in such topics as notation, strategy, and the exercising of pieces to their fullest capacity.
All our students are versed in such things as tournament rules and regulations, how to use a chess clock, and chess notation. We hold tournaments at various times in the year, awarding prizes and medals to all participants.
There is a registration fee of $5.00 for all club members, to provide the club with additional boards and clocks.
Our club director is Matt Carr. He will be happy to answer any questions that you may have, and would love to hear from you.
We hope to see you there, and please feel free to bring a friend with you!
